Five Little Know Facts about the Polycast 3000 series
The 3000 Series trench drain system has been around since the year 1998. I remember first seeing the pre-sloped fiberglass system on a set of construction plans while estimating for a precast concrete manufacturer in Bethlehem, PA.
The long throat (or neck, as some may say) of the channel underneath the sturdy frame and grate was quite unique. This terminated into a bulbous channel bottom, smooth and round, which provided more flow capacity than its competitors. It was like no other channel drain at the time.
I learned more about Polycast 3000 when I became a Polycast distributor in eastern Pennsylvania and began selling the high-volume drain to airport and highway projects. Engineers loved specifying the system in tarmacs, hangars and roadways because of its large flow capacity, heavy duty construction and small footprint.
I sold the 3000 series, with Class F grating, to Boeing in Philadelphia, Scranton International Airport and Queen City Airport in Allentown. I also was able to use it in loading docks at the Crayola Crayon factory in Easton. Many other small and lesser known applications saw the benefits of this drain that looked like a cross between a trench drain and a slot drain.
The successes of this product are still seen today. In celebration of the 17 year anniversary of the 3000 series, I’m going to share 5 things you didn’t know about this rugged channel drain system.
1. The 3000 Series has had 3 owners.
In January 2015, Hubbell Power Systems and Trench Drain Systems, a major online trench drain company, struck an agreement for the purchase of this product line. They are the third and current owner of the the 3000 Series.
Strongwell, a large fiberglass manufacturer, was the original developer of the Polycast 3000 product line. It was developed as a way to utilize their fiberglass technology and integrate it into the polymer concrete trench drain product line (Polycast) they had previously purchased.
In 2006, Hubbell Power Systems purchased the polymer concrete manufacturing plant in Lenoir City, TN and the Polycast product line. With this transaction, they became the second owners of the Polycast 3000 Series. In an attempt to diversify their large fiberglass channel offering, Hubbell developed and began manufacturing two other large fiberglass drain body products; FP0800 and FP1200. The Polycast 3000 product line took a backseat to these newer products.
2. Polycast 3000 competes with Zurn’s Z812 and ACO’s FG200.
During the initial development of the large modular trench drain marketplace, fiberglass was the material of choice because of its lightweight and chemical resistance. And, channel installation was quicker and less costly than building trench drains in the old formed-in-place method.
Zurn’s Z812 and ACO FG-200 fiberglass channels were made basically identical to each other, except in color. The development of Polycast 3000 brought a new design to this market which had some definite technical advantages.
3. Polycast 3000 is the first variable sloped, fiberglass channel trench drain system.
The channel design of the 3000 series lends itself to custom slope designs. Common trench slopes are 0.5%, 0.75% and 1.0%, though high slopes can be achieved. Other similar competitive products, such as Zurn’s Z812 and ACO’s FG200, come with a 1% built in slope and can only support continuous channel runs of 108 feet. With the ability of being able to use a 0.5% slope, the 3000 series can offer continuously sloped channel runs of 240 feet.
4. Polycast 3000 has a new name.
The new name is the “3000 Series”. That’s right!! Why mess up a good name. Trench Drain Systems had to drop the “Polycast” brand from the name because they didn’t purchase the Polycast name. But they felt that the “3000 Series” name has recognition across the industry on its own and is important in highlighting the fact that the system is capable of 3000 gallons per minute of flow.
Previous owners of the 3000 series didn’t have many grating option for the drain. The most common grate sold was the heavy duty, class F, ductile iron grate. Other grates that were available became obsolete due to low demand in the later years at Hubbell. However, Trench Drain Systems has added HS-20 rated ductile iron slotted and ADA grates to the product offering. Galvanized steel bar grating and fiberglass grating have also been re-introduced, as well.
